Flatland Fungi began with a simple fascination: growing mushrooms.
For nearly a decade, our founder, Dillon McGuire, has been immersed in mycology, learning through hands-on cultivation, working with mushroom cultures, experimenting with genetics, and growing everything from Lion’s Mane and Shiitake to Oyster, Chestnut, and other gourmet varieties.
What started as a personal passion eventually became Flatland Fungi in 2017, with a goal of helping everyday people experience mushrooms for themselves.
For approximately five years, we’ve operated a small-scale, research-oriented mushroom farm where we work directly with mushroom cultures and cultivate a wide range of gourmet species.
Lion’s Mane has always been a favourite.
Growing it firsthand, from culture and colonization through fruiting and harvest, has given us an appreciation for the mushroom that goes far beyond reading an ingredient specification sheet.
After years of working with cultures, growing mushrooms, and supplying fellow growers, creating functional mushroom supplements felt like a natural next step.
We wanted to take what we had learned from actually working with mushrooms and apply that experience to a product people could easily incorporate into their everyday lives.
And when it came time to create our first Lion’s Mane supplement, we approached it the same way we approach cultivation: know what you’re working with and don’t cut corners.
Our Lion’s Mane formulation was personally selected with one priority in mind: make a high-quality, potent mushroom product and be transparent about what’s inside it.
That meant choosing a concentrated 10:1 extract, using 100% Lion’s Mane fruiting body, and guaranteeing more than 30% beta-glucans.
The result is 11,000 mg equivalent of Lion’s Mane per serving, without relying on grain, mycelium, or unnecessary fillers.
They’re something we grow, study, experiment with, and genuinely enjoy.
Flatland Fungi is still a family-owned Canadian mushroom business at heart. The same curiosity that led us to our first cultures continues to influence the products we make today.
